One thing that all of us, Buddhists or otherwise, tend to forget is mindfulness(yeah, that part of Zen that posers don't like to talk about). In Zazen(or meditation for non-Zenbies), the goal is to clear your mind; empty it of all thought and distraction so that you can enhance your own focus. And once you've been doing this long enough, mindfulness does merely manifest itself in Zazen(technically, I'm not a Zen Buddhist, but "zazen' is quicker to type than "meditation"); it come forth in everyday events too. It makes one more alert without trying to be alert, more aware of their surroundings without trying to be so, and increases your concentration and attention span over time.
But more importantly.... in helping us to be more aware of our surroundings, it also helps avoid what happens to one William Murderface.
